Pleiotropy and multilocus polymorphisms.

چکیده
It is demonstrated that systems of two pleiotropically related characters controlled by additive diallelic loci can maintain under Gaussian stabilizing selection a stable polymorphism in more than two loci. It is also shown that such systems may have multiple stable polymorphic equilibria. Stabilizing selection generates negative linkage disequilibrium, as a result of which the equilibrium phenotypic variances are quite low, even though the level of allelic polymorphisms can be very high. Consequently, large amounts of additive genetic variation can be hidden in populations at equilibrium under stabilizing selection on pleiotropically related characters.

Genetic Heterogeneity among Leishmania major Isolates in Iran Determined by Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) and Multilocus Microsatellite Typing (MLMT)
Background & Aims: In recent years, molecular methods for characterizing genetic heterogeneity have found a major place in modern approaches. In this study, two different molecular techniques including Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) and Multi Locus microsatellite typing (MLMT) were carried out in order to evaluate genetic heterogeneity among isolates of Leishmania major in Iran...
متن کاملSelfish genes, pleiotropy and the origin of recombination.
If multiple linked polymorphisms are under natural selection, then conflicts arise and the efficiency of natural selection is hindered relative to the case of no linkage. This simple interaction between linkage and natural selection creates an opportunity for mutations that raise the level of recombination to increase in frequency and have an enhanced chance of fixation. This important finding ...
متن کاملShould individual fitness increase with heterozygosity?
Natural selection influences not only gamete frequencies in populations but also the multilocus fitness structures associated with segregating gametes. In particular, only certain patterns of multilocus fitnesses are consistent with the maintenance of stable multilocus polymorphisms. This paper offers support for the proposition that, at stable, viability-maintained, multilocus polymorphisms, t...
متن کاملCo-regulation and multilocus determinants of gene expression in humans
BACKGROUND The regulation of gene expression is an emerging area of investigation. Increased knowledge can deepen our understanding of the genetic contributions to variations in complex traits. The purpose of this study is to explore the feasibility of detecting regulatory elements of gene expression with multivariate analyses. METHODS Peripheral blood lymphocyte expression levels of 30 genes...
متن کاملUsing a Bayesian latent variable approach to detect pleiotropy in the Genetic Analysis Workshop 18 data
Pleiotropy, which occurs when a single genetic factor influences multiple phenotypes, is present in many genetic studies of complex human traits. Longitudinal family data, such as the Genetic Analysis Workshop 18 data, combine the features of longitudinal studies in individuals and cross-sectional studies in families, thus providing richer information about the genetic and environmental factors...
